Hi, My name is Shivonne and welcome to Akoma Counseling Concepts, LLC! I am passionate about helping
improve the mental health of women, helping promote women’s empowerment and mental health
awareness. I completed my bachelors degree in psychology from the University of Massachusetts, Boston
and graduated with my masters degree in counseling psychology from Howard University.
I hold several certifications and clinical licenses. I am licensed to practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor in Washington DC, a National Certified Counselor, and a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of Maryland. I am a National Certified Perinatal Mental Health therapist by Postpartum Support International. I am also a board Approved Clinical
Supervisor by the Maryland Board of professional counselors and therapists. I have been licensed to practice professional counseling for more than 11 years.
At my practice Akoma Counseling Concepts, LLC, I provide counseling services to women and girls aged
16 years- Adult. I utilize a cognitive behavioral therapy and person centered theoretical orientation. I also use
solution focused and interpersonal therapy. I specialize in maternal mental health counseling for mothers and mothers with perinatal disorders (Postpartum depression, fertility issues, miscarriage, and postpartum anxiety). I have completed post-graduate certificate training in maternal mental health counseling via Postpartum Support International and Mary’s Center Clinic's DC PMH Champions project in Washington, D.C.
My work in mental health has been featured in several local media outlets, national podcasts, and social media publications, such as Romper, Parents magazine and Huff Post. In 2019 I presented at the following conferences on Black Maternal Mental Health: Postpartum Support International (PSI), U.S. Breastfeeding Committee, and Perinatal Support Washington Conferences. I have also participated in a Black Maternal Mental Health collaboration with the Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands to provide maternal mental health care to residents of St. Croix, USVI in September, 2019. I am a member of of the DMV Perinatal Mental Health Champions and Postpartum Support International.
I strive encourage and motivate women to live healthier lives through social justice, advocacy, continuing education, and mental health counseling. My clinical staff has various openings waiting to serve your clinical needs.
